If stainless steel is naturally resistant to corrosion the surface layer has been subject to passivation, which instantly reconstitutes the surface layer using oxygen from air or water, however, these alloys are sensitive to many cleaning agents:
- Corrosive detergents or detergents with a strong alkaline pH
- Chlorine derivatives, such as found in permanent saline environments, bleach when used as a disinfectant, hydrochloric acid when used as a cement laitance cleaner.
- Scouring powders, abrasive pads
- Silverware cleaning products
- Acidity from fingerprints
Many producers and processors of stainless steel, particularly manufacturers of household electrical appliances, recommend the surface of the steel is “lubricated”. This in effect ‘nourishes’ the surface, and protects the steel from aggressive external agents.
